Feasibility Study

A new scientific tool for the post-LHC landscape

The Future Circular Collider Study (FCC) is developing designs for a new research infrastructure to host the next generation of higher performance particle colliders to extend the research currently being conducted at CERN’s flagship Large Hadron Collider the LHC, once the High-Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) reaches its conclusion in around 2040.

The goal of the FCC is to push the energy and intensity frontiers of particle colliders, with the aim of reaching collision energies of 100 TeV, in the search for new physics.

A scientific mission for the 21st century

The discovery of the Higgs boson has dramatically changed the particle physics landscape, opening the door to the study of many qualitatively new fundamental interactions. One of the core goals of the FCC programme is to directly observe and study these interactions of the Higgs, with the W and Z bosons, quarks and leptons, and of the Higgs with itself, the keystone of the Standard Model of particle physics. 

The FCC will also offer a broad physics programme beyond the Higgs sector, including searches for answers to many of the other major open questions of particle physics, such as the nature of dark matter, the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry in the Universe, and the source of neutrino masses. This diverse physics programme will be enabled by the unprecedented precision, sensitivity and energy reach of CERN’s Future Circular Colliders.

Accelerators

Preparing the next-generation of particle colliders to boost the energy and intensity frontiers.

The FCC Study is developing concepts for post-LHC circular particle colliders and is exploring an integrated scenario based on a step-by-step approach. The latter has construction and operation in two stages: initially an electron–positron collider (FCC-ee) serving as a Higgs and electroweak factory will offer extremely precise measurements followed by a 100 TeV proton–proton (FCC-hh) collider that would provide direct access to new particles and phenomena. In addition, heavy-ion or hadron–lepton collisions could add to the versatility of the FCC research programme

Wigner Research Centre for Physics deals with the following main research areas as research activities: Experimental and theoretical particle physics, nuclear physics, general theory of relativity and gravitation, fusion plasma physics, space physics, nuclear materials science, mainly in the Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics.

In order to be able to meet the ever-increasing demands of the LHC experiments, and to be able to ensure the availability of critical services in the event of a major incident at the CERN Data Centre, CERN IT is installing equipment at the Wigner Data Centre in Budapest, Hungary. The capacity at Wigner is remotely managed from CERN, substantially extending the capabilities of the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) Tier-0 activities.

The country gained independence that same year and, in the following year, it became a private institution named the Tallinn College of Engineering.

NPM SIlmet OÜ is located in Sillamäe, Ida-Virumaa. NPM Silmet OÜ is one of Europe's largest rare metal and rare earth metal manufacturers, as well as the only processor outside of China with such a wide range of high-purity products. The company is global indeed  - 99% of the materials used for production are purchased from outside of Estonia (mainly Brazil, USA and Russia), with 99% of the output sold abroad (mainly the European Union, USA and Japan). NPM SIlmet OÜ has three plants: a rare earth metals plant with an annual production of 3,000 tonnes, a rare metals plant with an annual production of 700 tonnes and a metallurgy plant.

NPM SIlmet OÜ' products are used in the car industry, aviation industry and electronic industry, as well as in high-tech applications. Up to a tenth of the tantalum and up to a fifth of the metallic niobium consumed by the world is currently produced by NPM SIlmet OÜ.

The company was initially founded in 1920 when a Swedish company established a local oil shale processing plant in Estonia. In the Soviet times, the company operated under the name of Plant No. 7, processing uranium. The production of rare metals and rare earth metals was launched in the 1970s. In 1990, the company was renamed Silmet, with the uranium processing shut down and focus set on rare metals and rare earths production. In 2011, AS Silmet merged with the Molcorp Minerals and was renamed Molycorp Silmet AS, and after NPM SIlmet OÜ.
