Shaping the Future of Particle Physics: FCC Week 2025 Comes to Vienna

FCC week poster

The eleventh edition of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) Conference is set to take place from 19 to 23 May 2025, in the majestic Vienna Imperial Palace (Wiener Hofburg). This highly anticipated event will be the first major international gathering following the release of CERN’s Feasibility Study on the FCC — a comprehensive document assessing the technical, environmental, and economic viability of a potential successor to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Published in March 2025, the FCC Feasibility Study lays the groundwork for future decisions in European and global high-energy physics. Its findings will feed into the next update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, guiding the direction of fundamental research for decades to come. Against this backdrop, FCC Week 2025 represents a turning point: moving from study to action.

A Collaborative Effort Across Borders

Organised in collaboration with the Institute of High Energy Physics (HEPHY) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), BOKU University, Technische Universität Wien, and WU Wien, and supported by AdvantageAustria, UNIQA, and the City of Vienna, FCC Week 2025 brings together a wide array of expertise and stakeholders from around the world. This includes scientists, engineers, environmental experts, economists, policymakers, and representatives from industry — all united by the shared goal of advancing knowledge and innovation.

Programme Highlights

Opening Plenary – Monday, 19 May
The week begins with a full day of plenary talks featuring distinguished international speakers. Topics will include:

  • The updated physics case for the FCC

  • Highlights from the FCC Feasibility Study

  • Progress on territorial implementation and civil engineering

  • Environmental and sustainability analyses

  • Roadmap for the next phase of the project

Early-Career Researchers Forum – Tuesday, 20 May
A dedicated platform for young scientists to present their work, exchange ideas, and connect with mentors and peers from across the globe.

Tunnelling and Infrastructure Special Plenary – Wednesday, 21 May
Austria’s leading role in large-scale tunnelling projects will take centre stage, covering logistics, planning, environmental challenges, and technology — all key concerns for the FCC’s ambitious underground infrastructure.

Closing Plenary – Friday, 23 May
A comprehensive wrap-up session will bring together outcomes from the parallel sessions and chart the way forward.

Parallel Sessions

Running from Tuesday through Thursday, the parallel sessions will offer in-depth discussions across thematic areas, including:

  • Particle physics and experiments

  • Accelerator and beam dynamics

  • Emerging technologies and detector R&D

  • Technical integration and civil engineering

  • Socio-economic impact and sustainability

  • Territorial implementation and regulatory frameworks

Poster Session – Thursday Afternoon

Researchers from across the globe are invited to present posters showcasing their latest results. The session offers valuable networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities in an informal setting.

Industry Day and Societal Impact Workshop – Wednesday

A joint session with AdvantageAustria and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber will explore the socio-economic footprint of large-scale research infrastructures like the FCC, as well as potential opportunities for innovation and industry collaboration.

Public and Cultural Events: Science in the Heart of Vienna

FCC Week 2025 extends beyond the scientific community to include a rich programme of public engagement and cultural activities across the city:

  • “Wheel of Science” at the Prater (19 May): Ride the Riesenrad with a particle physicist and discuss the mysteries of the Universe.

  • “Code of the Universe” Exhibition (20 May): Opening of a unique public art and science installation at Josefsplatz, Hofburg.

  • Public Talk “The Higgs Boson and Our Lives” (20 May): With CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti and Ulrike Diebold of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, followed by a networking reception.

  • Pint of Science Austria (21 May): Casual conversations with researchers at Pickwick’s Pub – part of the global Pint of Science festival.

  • Classical Concert at Musikverein (21 May): The Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester performs in the iconic Golden Hall.
